Riverfest weekend underway in Berwick

Thousands are expected to head to the 13th annual Riverfest in Columbia County. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress gives us a look at the opening day.

BERWICK, Pa. — As far as the eye can see, vendors and food trucks packed the midway at the test track park in Berwick. It's all for the opening day of Riverfest.

"It's wonderful, especially with all of the rain we had at the fair and everything. It's nice to actually have some sunshine peeking through the trees," said Charity Lynn of Berwick.

The free event is in its 13th year and highlights everything the area offers along the Susquehanna River.

"It's a beautiful nature park right next to the river. It's great here all of the time, but I think this weekend really brings out the best of it and brings out the best of our community," said Damien Scoblink, Berwick Borough Manager.

From live demonstrations and shopping for handmade crafts, there's a lot to see and do at the festival. The big draw, however, is the food. When Newswatch 16 stopped by around lunchtime, we found many people lining up to snag their favorites.

"You can't come without getting a piece of pizza. Then we have to stop at John the Greek to get my brother-in-law a gyro," said Lynn.

"There's a lot of new. There's a lot of old favorites. I would challenge someone to come down here and tell me there's not something they are going to love," added Scoblink.

Riverfest is also a way for the community to support local organizations like the Ranger Hose Company. Chief Greg Harkins tells Newswatch 16 that this weekend is their largest fundraiser of the year.

"We see a lot of people come back year in and year out, and we see some new people we haven't seen before who say we didn't know you were here, so that is nice," said Chief Harkins.

Riverfest runs through Sunday. For a full lineup of live music and performances, we have a link here
