BERWICK, Pa. — Volunteers were busy on Wednesday setting up trees on Market Street in Berwick. They've been working all week to prepare for Berwick's Christmas Boulevard, which opens this weekend.
"We're going through now and running all the electrical lines, hooking the electricity up for all the figures. Some are animated, some are still," said Marty Smith, Berwick Christmas Boulevard Association vice president.
Berwick's Christmas Boulevard is a tradition dating back more than 75 years. The one-mile attraction features lights, displays, trees, and, of course, Santa.
"You'll see fun, you'll see angels, you'll see a lot of different varieties of all of the Christmas theme," said Patsy Bowers, the president of the Berwick Christmas Boulevard Association.
Many displays are created a few blocks away at Berwick's Jingle Hall.
"Refurbish the figures, change them from year to year for things that we need, whatever needs to be done," volunteer David Talanca said.
Talanca is one of more than 50 volunteers who make Berwick's Christmas Boulevard a success. He works on these figures year-round.
"A lot of hours, a lot of work. As a matter of fact, I started last January as soon as we took it down," Talanca said.
The event is organized so people can drive down Market Street at night and check out all the Christmas lights.
"Opening night is the only night people are able to walk the boulevard, so that's the only night, and after that, it's cars, and it's just a wonderful experience for everyone," Bowers said.
Christmas Boulevard opens Saturday and runs nightly until December 29.
