BERWICK, Pa. — The Nespoli family from Berwick are no strangers to the fight against cancer.
After 8 years in remission, Kim Nespoli was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer earlier this year. The cancer has spread to her liver, lungs and bones.
Now, the Berwick community is rallying around the Nespoli family in their second fight against cancer by lighting the borough pink.
Jennifer Berlin, a family friend of the Nespoli's, has known Kim and her husband Jonathon Nespoli since high school. She says, she never expected this idea to blow up like it has.
"Her friend first, Megan Post, brought this to us and a bunch of friends just started buying light bulbs and it went on fire,' Berlin says.
What started as a small effort among family and friends has grown into a community-wide plan.
The family owns Nespoli Jewelers in Berwick, and now other businesses around the borough are selling pink light bulbs for five dollars. All of the money goes directly to the Nespoli family.
Residents are asked to put the lightbulbs on their front porches in a show of support for Kim.
Karen May, another family friend of the Nespoli family has known Kim since she was a little girl.
""I've known the family for a long time. We grew up here and I worked with her dad so we have great ties with them. She's a wonderful person and she's deserving of this," says May.
Other fundraisers are also popping up in Berwick. Some of the proceeds from Berwick's Wine In The Grove event also went to the family. Mason's Monogram Services in Berwick also created a clothing line to support the Nespoli family. The items are sporting the phrase "Love Life," something Kim's husband, Jonathan Nespoli, says she continues to do during her treatments out in Arizona.
Jennifer Berwin says, ""So, this is helping with treatments for Kim while she's out in Arizona. This is helping the family while she's away from home and all those things."
While Kim is away from home, a community is glowing pink waiting for her return. After settling in her Arizona apartment with her mother, Kim gave an update to the Berwick community via social media. Watch it here.
Kim's husband says he hopes Berwick will be completely bathed in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, not only in support of Kim but for everyone in the fight against cancer.
