MIFFLIN TOWNSHIP -- Traffic is moving again in Columbia County after being backed up for hours.

A tractor trailer lost its load on Interstate 80 east Friday morning. PennDOT was forced to shut down both lanes of traffic at the Berwick/Lime Ridge exit and it caused quite a mess for drivers.

Connie Dutton from Lock Haven was among the drivers stuck in traffic. She was trying to get to the Poconos.

"I just was hoping to get there a little sooner but i think the traffic did well getting us here safe and everything went okay," Dutton said.

The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. at the Mifflinville river bridge.

According to state police, the driver of the tractor trailer was trying to switch lanes when another tractor trailer tried to pass. The modular home slipped from the platform bed and landed tipped to the side in the middle of the highway.

Traffic had to be detoured off the interstate onto Route 11.

"It is a long day. It's a long drive. It's a nine-hour drive for us, but it is what it is. What can you do? You just sit in traffic and wait," said Mike Byler from Michigan.

Drivers say even though they had to spend a few hours in traffic, once they got to the detour it actually wasn't that bad. There were multiple people directing traffic, making sure everyone got to where they needed to go.

"You just have to follow the signs you know. Just pay attention to the traffic as it goes and be safe with each other on the road," Dutton said.

"We were stopped pretty much, just inching along. That's all I really know, a little tedious," said Margarete Marchese from Pittsburgh.

Interstate 80 east reopened just before 1 p.m.

At this time, there is no word if the driver of the rig carrying the modular home will be cited.
