High school math students compete in Bloomsburg

Students added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided their ways to victory at a competition in Bloomsburg.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — More than 200 high school students from all over northeastern and central Pennsylvania put their math skills to the test at Bloomsburg University on Tuesday.

"It's anything from geometry, algebra, to trig. It's all different levels of math," Katie Wank said.

This is the 25th annual High School Math Contest. Nearly two dozen school districts participated.

"They compete in the Quiz Bowl, which is a Jeopardy game. We compete in brain teasers, which is logic problems, and this afternoon, as you'll see, they're going to compete in the Game of 24 Points, which is a card game where they're using arithmetic," organizer Lisa Lister said.

The goal is to get students excited about math.

"We try to make it so you can be a ninth grader, an eighth grader, and still be able to do some of the problems, as well as seniors be able to do some of the problems," Lister said.

Students say it's an adrenaline rush crunching the numbers.

"I like being able to compete against peers in other schools and really showing your ability and other skills you've developed throughout the years," Matthew Angelo said.

"I like to be able to compete and show my skills against other schools and compare myself to how other people at other schools are doing," Justin Watcher said.

The top four teams won prizes.
