Firefighters sell flowers for Mother's Day

A little bit of rain didn't stop firefighters in Benton from selling flowers for their Mother's Day fundraiser.

BENTON, Pa. — It was a packed house Friday at the Benton Volunteer Fire Company, but thankfully there was no fire. This is the company's 18th Mother's Day flower sale.

"We sell flowers Friday and Saturday, all day long, to benefit the fire company," organizer Cindy Matthews said.

There is a wide variety of flowers for sale, something for every budget.

"We have hanging baskets and patio plots, plus we have flats, and they are very colorful," Matthews said.

Matthews says this is something people look forward to.

"Every year, we have people come in and say, 'We couldn't wait until you opened for Mother's Day.' They come every year to buy their flowers here to support us," Matthews said.

Vera Everitt of Benton picked out some flowers for herself.

"How nice is it to support the fire company?

"Oh, I like to do that," Everitt replied. "I do it all the time."

Penn State Creamery ice cream is a new feature this year.

All proceeds from the flower sale and a portion of the ice cream sales go directly to the volunteer fire company.

"Keep up on the fire trucks, apparatus, equipment, the fire gear," Matthews said.

The flower sale continues all day Saturday at the Benton Volunteer Fire Company.
