Columbia County camp teaches children about the outdoors and working as a team

A camp in Columbia County might just be a week every summer for the kids who attend, but it's become much more than that for the man in charge.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Children fly through the air on zip lines at Bloomsburg University. It's just one of many activities at Camp Quest. The day camp teaches children between the ages of 8 and 13 about exploring the outdoors and working as a team.

"We get on the river, field games capture the flag, things like that, we spend every moment outside, they go home tired, it's a great day every day, I'm just getting the kids out running around in nature," said Nick McCormack.

Nick McCormack attended the program when he was in elementary and middle school.  Now, he's the director of the Quest Adventure program. He says he fell in love with the outdoors and wanted to give children the same experience he had.McCormack tells us he and other staff members see a big change in the children who come to the camp every year.

"And here they are now, we've had them now for their third year, and they're going off both the ziplines or jumping off the leap of faith, and the giant's ladder, they're getting up there, they're getting out there and doing it, and it's just stuff they wouldn't have considered doing three years ago so it's awesome to see them grow like that."

This is Lydia Duane's first year at Camp Quest. Her favorite activity so far is hiking. She and other campers even found a geocache.

"It's like a box in the middle of the woods that people place down with a bunch of survival gear and food," said Lydia Duane, Bloomsburg.

Duane is also enjoying learning about the importance of teamwork.

"I get to help everybody do the zip line, and then I'm eventually gonna go on the zip line."
