116-year-old Columbia County monument gets a facelift

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker shows us what's happening in the heart of Bloomsburg.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — A maintenance crew can be found power washing the Soldiers and Sailors monument on Main and Market Streets in Bloomsburg. The monument was in need of a touch up.

"We did have some complaints from constituents about the you know the monument needed to be cleaned so that's one of the things the commissioners were committed to do is clean the actual monument and restore it to back to its original beauty," said David Witchey, Columbia County Chief Clerk.

Cleaning and restoring the monument is going to take about two to three days. Some of the repairs to the monument besides power washing include fixing the cracks and chips.

"And some of the leading that was there that sealed the gaps is going to be replaced by a more modern technology then something that was done in 1908, so that's what the contractor's going to do and then he's going to put tabs on it so that the skateboarders can't ride across the granite," said Witchey.

The monument was built in 1908 to honor veterans who fought in the Civil War. The four branches of military during that time are represented, with a soldier on top holding a flag.

"Highlights the 8 battles that the Columbia County residents fought in at least the most know battles that they are around the top proportion of the monument," said Witchey.

David Witchey, Columbia County's Chief Clerk says refurbishing the monument is just one way to keep the town nice.

"And this will just add to that whole on beyond some of the town itself, and we just want to be part of that, and do everything we can to make everything look very presentable and nice."

The Columbia County Commissioners would like to do a rededication of the monument sometime in the future.
