BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Police stations are equipped with just about everything. But there's something unusual piling up in Bloomsburg. Before a new police car can hit the road, it goes through an entire makeover.
"There's an extensive amount of upfitting that occurs that requires modifications, and in most cases, manufacturers facilitate that the cars do come through," said Bloomsburg Police Chief Scott Price.
That includes removing the back seats.
"That precludes the ability to conceal contraband or a weapon or something of that nature to drop it into the vehicle," said Chief Price.
Making it safer and a little bit easier to clean up.
"In order for us to get a vehicle upfitted, not only do we have a fiberglass seat, which is easier to clean is more sanitary, but also, because it's one piece molded fiberglass, it precludes the possibility that someone would deposit contraband or a weapon in the back seat, stuff it between seat cushions we wouldn't find it, or we would it find there sometime after," said Chief Price.
All together there's more than 14 backseats currently sitting in storage, which is more than any department says they need.
"What we're hoping is there's some market that we can recoup some monies for the town and also not simply throw fully functional equipment seats away," said Chief Price.
Bloomsburg Police Chief Scott Price is hoping there's someone out there, either a car collector or cab service, that's willing to take the back seats off the department's hands.
"Potentially we can sell it to another municipality without going through the bid process but if someone from the public would be interested then it would have to go through municibid," said Police Chief Price.
The first round are already up for auction online.
