LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Remote-controlled planes will take to the sky this weekend at the William T. Piper Memorial Airport in Lock Haven. The planes are here for the 22nd annual Wings Over Piper remote-controlled model plane fun fly.
"We put on the event, people come to the nice historic location to be able to fly their r/c airplanes at this beautiful historic location in aviation, people definitely recognize the J3 Piper Cub, and many people fly them in models, and they love the Piper Cubs, so they come here to fly their Cubs at the local event," said Kevin Ziegmann, Wings Over Piper Remote Control Fly-In event director.
People from all over Pennsylvania and out of state come to the event and bring their remote control planes of all sizes and models.
"There's some guys that fly giant scales that love the large stuff, and there are some guys that are just happy flying the smaller sport model, so it's each individual's own, and we have some great large airplanes that are here already, and some more that are expected to be on their way," said Ziegmann
David Rissinger from Dalmatia has been attending the event since it started. He enjoys seeing all the new planes people bring.
"They get bigger every year, so mainly just hanging out, seeing all of the new stuff."
Cory Rossi from West Chester, New York, tells us he comes back to the Wings Over Piper event every year for the people.
"It's just a warm, welcoming environment, and it's a lot of nice people, and after 20 years, you could imagine you get a lot of nice friends from the experience, so I just enjoy coming back."
The 2024 Wings Over Piper continues Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Lock Haven.
