RENOVO -- A building that used to be a district magistrate's office in Clinton County has been sold. The magistrate in Renovo moved into a different building in September.

Newswatch 16 got a look at that place Thursday to find out why it's such an improvement over the old office.

The old third district court building on Third Street in Renovo has a leaky ceiling and dark, outdated carpeting.

"It's been deteriorating, we've had issues there with mold and some foundation issues," said Commissioner Joel Long.

Clinton County commissioners say the issues would have been too costly to repair. Two years ago, the county bought a building on Ninth Street in the borough and did a lot of renovations.

"This was an old barber shop. They gutted everything in here, took everything out and just started all over again," said District Judge Frank Mills.

District Judge Frank Mills says the move from the old building was a long time coming.

"Some of the issues were the mold, there were mold issues," said Commissioner Long.

On rainy days, Judge Mills says the ceiling would leak right into his office. Now that they've moved all that has changed.

"I don't even think about it anymore," said Judge Mills.

Buying and renovating the old barbershop on Ninth Street cost Clinton County around $260,000 but the county has made some of that money back.

"We didn't want to add another blighted property to Renovo, but then someone contacted us and said well we'd like to buy it."

A couple from Florida bought the old magistrate's office for $30,000 and they plan to make it their home.
