LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — A busy week at the Lock Haven Airport is underway as hundreds of planes make their way for the 38th annual Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven Fly-In.
"This is just the greatest way to honor not only the aircraft but the man who built the Piper Cub: Mr. William T. Piper Sr.," said Kim Garlick, executive coordinator of the Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven.
Garlick says by the weekend, there will be up to 400 Piper Cup airplanes at the Lock Haven Airport. About 2,500 spectators will also make the trek.
"You make a lot of friends on Sentimental Journey week," Garlick said. "You renew your old friendships. We see these people once a year, and they're like family. Everybody looks forward to seeing family in June, and it's just an awesome atmosphere."
Bob Hospodar makes the trip from Hookstown in western Pennsylvania every year.
"People come up and say, 'Hi, Bob.' I have no idea who they are. Because I met them, they remember me. I don't remember them, it's like, yeah, yeah, we did this together. And it's true, we probably did. They're just friends you don't realize you have."
Brain Bell from Hummelstown has been flying for 23 years and has been coming to the Sentimental Journey Fly-In for 19. He's looking forward to a family fun-filled week.
"It's a great fly-in. It's supporting the local airport here, the Sentimental Journey that's been here for almost 40 years, I think, now, just great family fun."
The Sentimental Journey Fly-In at the Lock Haven Airport will run through Saturday. Admission is $12.
