CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — The snow guns are fired up, and that means ski season is here again.
Jack Frost Ski Resort near White Haven is the first resort in the Keystone State to open for the season.
"We are really excited to be able to lead the pack, kick everything off and get everybody out and excited for the season ahead of us," said Tony Santora, general manager at Jack Frost Ski Resort.
There are four trails open at Jack Frost to start the season.
When Newswatch 16 stopped by, we found lots of skiers and snowboarders who came out to ride the fresh powder.
"Jack Frost is great, first time here so I like it," said Kayla Zalewski of New Jersey.
"It is first day on hill cant miss it. I could enjoy this every day of the year, I'm pretty much out here. My home mountain is Camelback but this place opened like ten days before so couldn't beat it" said Travis Weidtman of Tannersville.
Opening day also brought out some people who are new to the sport.
"It's weird because I feel most comfortable going full speed on a ramp compared to going down the mountain I'm scared to catch an edge but when I go off a ramp im not scared of falling off of that," said Zalewski.
"It's a little crunchy because it is cold, but once the sun comes out, it's beautiful and soft in spots, and they let you go in the woods here. That is nice," described Weidtman.
General Manager Tony Santora tells Newswatch 16 there is a lot of work that goes into preparing for opening day, well before the winter season.
"Through the summer, we're getting our lifts ready to go getting the snow guns ready, and then since Friday, I can't thank our snowmakers enough. They have been working around the clock to get the snow on the ground and get everything groomed out, explained Santora.
Additional trails at Jack Frost will open as the season ramps up.
