Ski resorts prep for start of season

Freezing temperatures are a welcome sight in the Poconos as resorts prepare for the upcoming ski season.

CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — It's all hands on deck at Blue Mountain Ski Resort, where crews have been working for weeks to get the slopes ready for this upcoming weekend.

It's beginning to look like ski season in Carbon County as one of the area's biggest resorts gets ready to open its slopes.

"We made some really large investments this summer and upgraded snow-making systems," said Ashley Seier, Blue Mountain Ski Resort.

This will be Ashley Seier's 14th season at Blue Mountain Resort.

Stretching over 171 acres, the ski resort features 40 slopes as well as 46 snow tubing lanes.

"This time of year is always so exciting; we're all watching the weather and trying to figure out when our opening day is going to be. Right now, we are anticipating this Saturday, December 2, but it could be even earlier if we continue to make snow and get enough base down out there," said Seier.

While much of northeastern and central Pennsylvania have yet to see an inch of snow, the folks here at Blue Mountain have been working out in the cold to make their own.

"We have one of the largest snowmaking systems on the East Coast, if not in the nation. What's really great about our system is when we get those windows, we can just maximize it more than anyone in the region," explained Seier.

After weeks of preparation, Seier says as long as Mother Nature gives them below-freezing temperatures, the 100 snow-making machines will take care of the rest, "We have a snow-making team that's here, they take shifts, but they're here 24/7 whenever we really get an opportunity with the weather to make snow, we are going to take advantage of every window we get."

Snow crews will be out blowing snow nonstop until Thursday to get ready for opening day on Saturday, December 2.
