FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Busy Route 209 near Lehighton was shut down for hours after state police say they were called to a high-speed police chase that ended with a shooting involving a police officer.
State police said the shooting happened following a chase that began in the borough of Beaver Meadows around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The chase lasted about 15 minutes and covered a distance of about 17 miles, according to troopers.
It ended on Route 209 between Lehighton and the entrance to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
State police say a single gunshot was fired at the end of the chase, and one person in the vehicle that led police on the chase was hit. That person was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Allentown.
Jocelyn Cebrosky works at Dunkin Donuts on Route 209 in Lehighton and saw the chase as it passed.
"I saw a bunch of cop cars and an ambulance zoom past and like a bunch of flashing lights, and it was really like a commotion and everything. I didn't know how to feel about it," Cebrosky said.
State police are handling the investigation.
Route 209 reopened just before 9 p.m.
