Patriotic painting in Lansford

Students in Carbon County are taking their skills outside of the classroom. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress shows us how their works of art are a tribute to our veterans.

LANSFORD, Pa. — With each stroke of a paint brush, the storefronts in downtown Lansford are getting a patriotic pop of color.

"Mainly flags because that is patriotic. Some stars and red, white and blue we did some soldiers and poppies," said Ava Alabovitz, Panther Valley High School junior.

The artists behind the paintings are student council members from Panther Valley High School.

The paintings are a way to brighten up the borough ahead of the Veterans Day parade.

Many of these students, like junior Gino Williams, have veterans in their own lives.

"My uncle Davey was part of the Air Force, and my grandfather was in the Navy." said Williams.

In a few weeks, people will take to the downtown for the Carbon County Veterans Day Parade hosted by the American Legion Post 123 in Lansford.

"It's for a good cause the parade is going to come through here and people are going to see our paintings." said Madeline Schirer, a Panther Valley High School sophomore.

Students tell Newswatch 16 they hope these paintings show the veterans that they're honored every day.

"They have done a lot for us so giving them that day is important." said Jessicca Hackask, a Panther Valley sophomore.

"Around here we have so many veterans and so many vets come down to these buildings all of the time. When we were in the coffee shop down there, we saw a veteran who told us he appreciates us doing this." said Alabovitz.

The Veterans Day parade will step off at 1:45pm on November 10th here in Lansford.
