Organization helping to provide cards to soldiers to send to loved ones

An American legion in Carbon County is helping to make sure soldiers overseas can send cards to their loved ones.

WEATHERLY, Pa. — Judy Desrosiers of Weatherly has been making and designing cards for the past 20 years it's a hobby of hers.

"I'm a fan of happy mail. I love happy mail. I love getting mail, it's better than a bill," said Derosiers.

But the cards she makes no longer just put a smile on her face, but hundreds of others.

Desrosiers makes cards for "Cards for Soldiers."

The organization provides greeting cards to deployed soldiers worldwide, in any branch of the military.

"We always feel like they wanna use that space to spend a special note," said Derosiers.

It was started by Air Force veteran Charly Mathews, who saw firsthand how hard it was to find cards to send home to family members while serving.

"They don't have a Walmart. They don't have dollar stores so they use these cards to send home to loved ones for different occasions," said Derosiers.

The difficulty is something Derosiers understands pretty well from her family members who served.

"My ex-brother-in-law was in Vietnam, and I wrote to him constantly, and he would right back to me something on the back of a paper bag because it's all that he had to write on," said Derosiers.

Since she started sending cards 3 years ago, she's received help from members of the American Legion Auxiliary 360 in Weatherly.

To date, the women have made over 800 cards, and they don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

The legion is hosting a "Cards for Soldiers" open house on March 26th, where community members can come and take part in making the cards.

The founder of the organization will also be visiting.

"If you don't want to put a card together and just wanna sit down for an hour or two to write a thank you to a veteran that served, thinking of you to a veteran that served. Thinking of you and thank you for your service to active military personnel, we are also going to be having tables for people to be signing cards," Derosiers said.
