Making a splash at Baer Memorial Pool

On a hot day, everyone wants to be at the pool. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress takes us to Lehighton, where a record number of people are using the community pool.

LEHIGHTON, Pa. — The sun is hot, but the water is cool at Baer Memorial Pool in Lehighton. Temperatures reached 90 degrees by noon.

"This is what, like, our 4th heat wave; it just seems like the sun is so hot it's just blazing on top of you," said Lehighton Borough recreation director Tom Evans.

The heat brought out lots of families to the pool looking to beat the heat. The pool on Bridge Street is a place just for people who live in Carbon County.

"Just enjoying the weather, we brought our son and his friend, just hanging out and catching some rays," said Dave Wapensky of Nesquehoning.

"It's just a really hot day, we just want to get in here and stay cool it's a beautiful day for the pool. I thought it would be packed today so I'm not surprised at all," said Joseph Korba of Lehighton.

"It's no secret; it's been a hot summer, and everyone is flocking to the pool to cool off. The Lehighton pool director says memberships are at an all-time high.

"Our memberships, it's the best year we're having.  We opened the pool 16 years ago, and it's our best year," said Evans.

Pool goers say the hot sun is better than what Mother Nature brings to our area during other times of the year.

"I'll take this anytime over the cold. I don't like the wintertime. I don't like the snow and the ice I'll take this anytime," Wapensky.
