Getting voters ready for Election Day

Newswatch 16's Emily Kress checked in with the Carbon County Election Bureau about what voters need to know ahead of November 5th.

CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — The countdown until the presidential election is on and counties across the nation are preparing.

In Carbon County, staff at the Election Bureau know that a presidential race draws voters out.

"Everybody and their brother comes out to vote the come out of the woodwork to vote, and everybody thinks that you don't have to register ahead of time that they can register that day and you can't," said Jane Krebs, voter registration specialist.

With less than 70 days to go, election workers are prepared to help residents with any and all election-related questions.

"If you have a question if you are registered or not give our office a phone call and we can definitely let you know, we can send you a registration form or you can go online at vote.pa.gov and you can do your registration on there," said Jennifer Ketchledge, director of elections in Carbon County.

Ketchledge says  voter registration is on the rise. staff are receiving about 10 applications a day and expects more as election day draws closer.

"We have a lot of new younger voters, but we also have the change of address also; that's probably half of our voter registration," said Ketchledge.

Currently there are more than 44,000 registered voters in Carbon County. Election officials remind voters it's also time to decide if you'd like to request a mail in ballot.

Election officials say when its time time to send in those mail-in ballots, voters can put those ballots in the mail or if you'd like to drop them off in person voters have to do so at the office in Jim Thorpe.

"We have no drop boxes in Carbon County; they have to drop it off here at our office by 8 pm on election day," said Krebs.

The last day to register to vote before the election is October 21st. Voters have until October 29th to request a mail-in ballot.
