Getting ready for the heat wave in Carbon County

Newswatch 16's Valeria Quinones spoke with people in Carbon County about what they have planned to beat the heat.

CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — The first day of summer is just around the corner, and the heat is already here.

People at Beltzville State Park in Carbon County are looking for all the ways to cool down, especially in the shade or in the water.

"It's been like really hot, and we wanted to go swimming, ya know, maybe tan with the sun," said  Julia Santana, Lehigh County.

According to the National Weather Service, it's going to get even hotter as this week welcomes a heat wave in Carbon County and surrounding areas

The heat is expected on Tuesday. People here are already thinking about how they will beat it.

"Probably go to Six Flags or the water park or just come to the lake or you know, because it's really hot and it's going to get even hotter," said Karlenis Rodriguez, Carbon County.

"I'm excited, so I'm from Puerto Rico, so I love the heat in the summer even though it can be a lot, so I'm excited to come back because I actually love it here," said Ashley Roman, Carbon County.

Roman had some advice for people who don't particularly like the water but still want to cool off, "Stay in the shade with water or stay inside with the AC that works too."

And that's exactly what Julia Santana plans to do, "We might go to the pool, maybe come back here because it's really nice here. Since it'll be so hot, the lake won't be so cold, yea, or I'll just stay home in my AC."

The Beltzville State Park Manager Ben Monk says if you plan to make a visit to the lake during the heatwave, get there early before the park reaches max capacity, "And if the park you get to is at capacity, make sure you have a backup plan, and also, if you're going to be in the water, be safe. Only swim in designated swim areas. Just because something looks safe doesn't mean it is safe."

He advises people to stay hydrated during the high temperatures, too.

"You don't want to become a heat casualty. You know a heat casualty is a very dangerous thing and if you don't watch that and you're not hydrated, it could be a very serious situation for you," said Monk.
