Drivers gearing up for Weatherly Hillclimb in Carbon County

Organizers are preparing to welcome crowds for the Weatherly Hillclimb. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress spoke with some drivers ahead of the big race.

WEATHERLY, Pa. — The trailers are rolling in, and drivers are gearing up for another weekend of racing at the Weatherly Hillclimb in Carbon County.

The cars are lined up and ready to take to the starting line.

"I think it's adrenaline you get from being around the cars all of the time. I enjoy it, so does everybody else here. It costs a lot of money to do this," said Randy Ross of Plains Township.

The Hillclimb started in 1961. Organizers say more than 100 drivers have signed up to take on the course this weekend.

"The technology is totally different racing back then till now. The idea is to get up there as fast as you can. Don't matter what you're driving," said Joe Cyburt with the Weatherly Hillclimb Association.

One thing that hasn't changed is the one-mile course on Hill Street with its twists and turns. George Bowland from South Carolina started racing at the Weatherly Hill Climb in 1987.

"It's the road, you and your car. It just always been exciting for me, even at my age at 82," said Bowland.

He currently holds the record for the fastest weatherly hill climb at 47.59 seconds.

"I broke it in 2012, so I hold it today. I'm hoping that it gets broken before I die just so I can shake the guy's hand," added Bowland.

Drivers tell Newswatch 16 there's a lot of work that goes into preparing these cars for the climb.

"Yeah, I do all of the paintwork, bodywork, mechanic work, I do everything," said Ross.

"It's a really nice family-friendly atmosphere, and it's always been like that. Weatherly is a beautiful little town, and everybody goes out of their way twice a year to put this on," said Cyburt.

Drivers take to the starting line on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.
