HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania is getting ready to host the largest indoor agricultural exhibit in the country. The Pennsylvania Farm Show officially gets underway Saturday.
When you go to the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg you expect to see the staples: produce, animals, and of course the milk shakes! But every year the organizers of the farm show come up with new things to do and see, and this year is no different.
“A lot of different events there that a lot of different ag people are going to be involved in,” George Greig said.
Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture George Greig said this year there will be lumberjack and lumberjill demonstrations. There will also be a family agriculture Olympics where teams can win prizes. And when it comes to the farm show food, it’s healthier this year.
Brenda Shimmel of Shickshinny is with the Pennsylvania Vegetable Growers Association.
“We’re just getting started with high oleic soybean oil. No trans-fat, we’re looking for the healthier side,” Shimmel said.
This year the farm show partnered with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to ‘fill a glass with hope’. This project will provide milk to people in 27 different counties.
“Really the idea is to bring refrigerated milk to people in need throughout Central Pennsylvania. This is going to help us pay for a large portion of it,” Joe Arthur said.
Organizers say every dollar donated to the program provides eight servings of milk to a family.
“We’re consuming a lot more milk that is produced in Pennsylvania which helps our dairy industry in Pennsylvania,” Greig said.
As for what else is new this year? You’ll just have to come to the farm show to find out! The 99th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show runs through next Saturday in Harrisburg.
Vendors spent the day Friday setting up for the big event.
