COAL TOWNSHIP -- A replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall is on display near Shamokin this weekend.
Piece by piece this tribute to fallen veterans was set up at the Uniontown Soccer Field near Shamokin.
It is the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall, which is a half-size replica of the memorial in Washington, DC. The wall is almost 250 feet long and has been touring the country for almost 30 years.
"I spent 27 months in Vietnam so this is very emotional," Greg Barkus said.
Greg Barkus of Atlas says it was emotional to see the memorial.
"I never did get to Washington to see the one down there, you know, the big one. This is really. It's hard," Barkus said.
"It's a lot of memories. A lot of good friends," Lawrence Latsko said.
Vietnam vet Lawrence Latsko spent the morning with his wife, looking for the names of the men he served with.
"I have good members that were members of my medivac unit that wrecked on the side of a mountain and were killed," Latsko said.
There's more than 58,000 names on this wall including more than 100 veterans from Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. So when people come to look at the wall they can pick up one of these programs which will tell them exactly where on the wall they can find their loved one.
The moving wall has been in other parts of our viewing area before, but never in Coal Township. The people here say they are proud to have it in their community.
"We are in a very small town. To get it here means something," Garth Hall said.
The wall will be on display until Monday, with a service on Saturday afternoon.
