Troy Fairgoers impacted by Route 6 bridge detour

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker spoke with fairgoers on how the bridge closure impacted their travels.

TROY, Pa. — While many people come to the Troy Fair from all over, some had trouble getting here because the Route 6 bridge in Troy Township is closed.

Last month, an oversized load struck the bridge, and PennDOT is currently working to restore it.

"It's a real problem for me because I live right on the other side of the bridge, so it kind of forces me to go in the other direction to Towanda if I need something from the store," said Rick Andrien of East Troy.

A detour has been put in place for the fair. Rick Andrien from East Troy tells us his five-minute commute to the fair is now 25 minutes.

"Yeah there's back roads but you know the local residents really don't like you using it but what are you gonna do, gotta get around."

Barb Nonnemacher from Troy says the Route 6 bridge closure is somewhat of an inconvenience for her.

"All my business is usually my family lives in Towanda, so I'm going that way anyway, so it doesn't. It's a pain, but it's hoping it'll get done before school starts."

While fair officials expect about 50,000 people to visit the fair this year, they're not concerned the bridge closure will impact those numbers.

"I mean we get a pretty good mix of people, people come from the East and the West, we get a lot from the Northern Elmira areas come down," said Josh Curren Troy Fair president.

Nonnemacher isn't letting the bridge closure stop her from frequently coming to the fair this week.

"I have plans everyday with the grandkids so we'll be here everyday, might not stay as long to get home before dark on these back roads but that's where it will be."

According to PennDOT, the bridge should be back open by the end of August.
