WILKES-BARRE -- A domestic dispute turned deadly in Luzerne County. One woman is dead and her husband is in the hospital.

Police in Wilkes-Barre are still piecing together the details of the murder and attempted suicide.  It's the ninth deadly shooting so far this year in the city.

Prosecutors say this was a domestic dispute that ended with gunfire.

Court documents show that Jane Aiello filed for divorce from her husband Vito just two weeks ago.

Luzerne County's district attorney believes Vito shot his wife Thursday night and then tried to take his own life. Instead, the businessman is in a hospital and prosecutors are preparing criminal charges.

In the dark, at the dead end of Andover Street neighbors say they heard gunshots inside a home owned by a family many people knew.

Wilkes-Barre police say officers were called for a domestic dispute.

Investigators say Jane Aiello died after being shot. Her husband Vito was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.

Neighbors say the couple's older son was away at college in central Pennsylvania. Their younger, teenage son was inside the home.

"You know that there is a child that's involved, a child that is part of the family that may have seen or witnessed something. You're always concerned about that child and the welfare of that child," said Luzerne County D.A. Stefanie Salavantis.

Salavantis says detectives believe this is a case of murder and attempted suicide.

Vito Aiello is in the hospital with serious injuries but prosecutors say he can still talk and will soon be charged.

Workers at Schiel's Family Market in South Wilkes-Barre tell us they are heartbroken. Employees say Jane and Vito were recently at the grocery store. Some workers say they were considered to be part of the family.

Grocery store manager Tom Lovecchio says Vito Aiello owns Andover Cleaning Company in Wilkes-Barre.

"He did our floors for the last eight years, ten years, and did an excellent job, hard worker," Lovecchio said.

Court documents show that Jane Aiello filed for divorce two weeks ago, asking a judge for custody of their younger son and for child support.

Some people say they didn't know the family was having problems.

"She was shopping in here last night but I didn't get a chance to say hi to her or anything, I was busy."

The coroner says an autopsy on Jane Aiello is expected Saturday morning.

The D.A. tells us Vito Aiello has serious injuries but prosecutors plan to file charges against him soon.
