SCRANTON -- About 1,000 people attended a boxing event in the Electric City Saturday night in a new venue: The Mall at Steamtown food court.
PA Golden Gloves eyed the food court a few months ago hoping to bring boxing back to downtown Scranton. Crews spent the last 48 hours constructing a boxing ring inside the room. Organizers expected about 1,000 boxing fans to take in close to 20 fights.
The event started with an undercard of budding boxers.
"Golden Gloves and all the fighters, they can't believe the logistics of the mall and what it turned into," said Doug Long, an organizer. "It's like Vegas style here as you can see, with excitement and enthusiasm in the air."
PA Golden Gloves officials said they have already planned at least one more event at the Mall at Steamtown.
