HARRISBURG -- A picture of a cancerous fish caught in the Susquehanna River caught the attention of people around the world.

A fisherman caught the smallmouth bass late last year near Harrisburg. The picture he took became an internet sensation in the spring.

State officials determined the growth on the bass' bottom lip was a malignant tumor.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection released a new study about the Susquehanna River Monday. The study took ten years to put together. Researchers say the smallmouth bass population in the river is shrinking.

Chemicals, pathogens, and parasites are killing the fish, but officials aren't sure where the fish killers are coming from.

In a statement, DEP secretary John Quigley said the study "does not identify a single smoking gun," but it does "point the way toward likely causes."
