Repairs underway on Route 6 bridge near Troy

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker stopped by the Route 6 bridge near Troy to check out the progress.

BRADFORD COUNTY, Pa. — Construction workers are busy fixing the Route 6 bridge over Sugar Creek in Troy Township.

Work is now underway after an oversized load struck the bridge last month.

Crews say they are working on heat straightening and putting beams that were damaged in the crash back into place.

Stripping paint to do some testing before we heat straighten and also put some bracing in to for the repairs that we have to actually replace steel," said Kevin Smith assistant construction engineer.

Repairs started last week. Along with heat straightening, crews will also be working on other parts of the bridge. " There's some sway members that they actually have to replace, the members going across the bridge, and then replace a couple of the uprights that can't be heat straightened," said Smith.

Work will continue into next week when the Troy fair begins. PennDOT has been working closely with the Bradford County emergency management agency, fair officials, and area municipalities to prepare for heavy fair traffic.

"Message boards, and additional measures to help people coming to the fair, coming west on Route 6 when they encounter this that they can use the detour, and then we're gonna do some message boards outside of the Troy fair so when they leave the Troy fair to get them quickly on the detour route," Jared McMicken, Bradford County manager.

A detour has been put in place for those heading to the Troy fair.

"For the cars, it starts on Leona road and then goes up to 4014 down to 14, and then the truck detour starts back in Berlington, and then that goes up over the hill and then connects right back into 14 as well," said McMicken.

PennDOT workers say they're right on schedule, and the bridge should be back open by the end of August.
