The Newswatch 16 team takes part in 'Read Across America'

Newswatch 16 is celebrating books and literacy with 'Read Across America' throughout our area.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Read Across America Week is a nationwide event by the National Education Association (NEA) promoting books and literacy. It often takes place on the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss.

  • Newswatch 16's Valeria Quinones read to first graders at Solomon Plains Elementary. She read "Misty the Cloud"  and taught students about what makes clouds and rainbows. In the story, the kids were especially excited to learn how sharing is caring and how coming together as a team is better than going against each other.
  • Newswatch 16's Steve Lloyd read to kindergarten and first grade classes at South Abington Elementary. Steve read "Pete the Cat."  The Lackawanna County commissioners were also there to read to second and third grade classes.
  • Newswatch 16's Melissa Steininger read at LIU 18’s Lighthouse Academy in Wilkes-Barre Township. Melissa read the book "Wonder" which focuses on how everyone is different and how important it is to be kind, no matter how someone looks. She also read Dr Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham."  The kids had a chance to ask about what we do at WNEP and what it’s like to be a reporter.
  • Newswatch 16 Meteorologist Ally Gallo read to kindergarten and fourth grade students at Charles Sumner Elementary in Scranton. Ally read "The Meteorologist in Me," one of her favorite books. Students had lots of questions about the weather, including, "Will it snow again this year?" And "Is Joe Snedeker just as crazy in real life?"
  • Newswatch 16's Jack Culkin read "Albert the Bear," "Down to the Sea with Mister McGee," and "Wacky Wednesday" to preschoolers at the Greater Scranton YMCA in Dunmore. 
  • Newswatch 16's Steve Lloyd visited Isaac Tripp Elementary School in Scranton on Tuesday and read two books with the fourth graders, "A Bad Case of Stripes" and "The Word Collector."
  • Newswatch 16's Lisa Washington visited with kindergarteners at St. Nicholas St. Mary School in Wilkes-Barre and read Dr. Seuss' "I Am Not Going to Get Up Today."
  • Newswatch 16's Nikki Krize read to third and fourth graders at the Five Star elementary program in Sunbury, which is part of the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit. Nikki read Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax," which the kids enjoyed.
  • Newswatch 16's Emily Kress spent some time at B.F. Morey Elementary in Stroudsburg to read "There's a Wocket in my Pocket," "Wings on Things," and "This Nest is Best" to first and second graders.
  • Newswatch 16's Jon Meyer stopped by All Saints Academy in Scranton to read to students. Jon read "The Book with No Pictures" to third, fourth, and fifth graders. The students had a half hour's worth of great questions for Jon about the news and his career.
  • Newswatch 16 morning anchor Mindi Ramsey read to students at Whittier Elementary in Scranton. The kids in Miss Grottola's fourth grade class say they really like Dr. Seuss. Mindi brought another rhyming book to try about a student who wants to build buildings. It's called "Iggy Peck, Architect."
  • Meteorologist Jeremy Lewan was in Scranton to read to second graders at Issac Tripp Elementary School. Jeremy read a new book called "Wally Takes a Weather Walk" written by a meteorologist in Nashville. It's all about the wonderful world of weather, as Wally learns about sunshine, rainbows, thunder, snow, and more.
  • Newswatch 16's Melissa Steininger read "There's a Wocket in My Pocket" to students at Lee Park Elementary in Hanover Township Tuesday afternoon. The students were ready to read in their Cat in the Hat-themed caps.
  • Newswatch 16's Jon Meyer stopped by Mr. Adamshick's class at Lehman Jackson Elementary in the Lake Lehman School District on Wednesday. Jon read "The Book with No Pictures" by B.J. Novak. Lehman Jackson Elementary is doing a week of activities and themes to celebrate Read Across America Week in Luzerne County.
  • Newswatch 16 anchor Scott Shaffer read "Green Eggs and Ham" to first graders at Schuylkill Haven Elementary on Wednesday.

  • Members of the Newswatch 16's morning crew also stopped by schools across our area. Jon Meyer took a trip to the northern tier to read to first and second-graders at Susquehanna Community Elementary School. Mindi Ramsey visited Moscow Elementary in the North Pocono School District and read to all seven of the second-grade classes.
  • Mindi Ramsey also read to students in Mrs. Bogansky's 4th-grade class at Hazleton Elementary Middle School. 
  • Newswatch 16's Chelsea Strub and Stromtracker 16 Meteorologist Jeremy Lewan participated in Read Across America with students and their parents in the Hazleton Area School District. Jeremy and Chelsea read to students and their parents in the cafeteria of Heights Terrace Elementary School as they ate green eggs and ham for breakfast. While Chelsea read a version in English, Jeremy read the Spanish language version of the book "Green Eggs and Ham" at the same time. School administrators say this is the first time they've ever had read across America guests read in both languages.
  • Stromtracker 16 Ally Gallo read at Ross Elementary School on Friday morning. She read "Freddy the Frogcaster, which is a book all about the weather. She read to the entire school, which is grades k-6, about 200 students.
