HAZLETON, Pa. — Read Across America Week is a nationwide event by the National Education Association (NEA) promoting books and literacy. It often takes place on the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss.
Newswatch 16's Chelsea Strub and Stromtracker 16 Meteorologist Jeremy Lewan participated in Read Across America with students and their parents in the Hazleton Area School District on Friday.
Jeremy and Chelsea read to 5 classes of 1st grade students and their parents in the cafeteria of Heights Terrace Elementary and Middle School as they ate green eggs and ham for breakfast and wore Dr. Seuss hats.
While Chelsea read the Dr. Seuss book "Green Eggs and Ham" in English, Jeremy read the Spanish language version of the book simultaneously, called "Huevos Verdes con Jamón."
School administrators say that this is the first time they've ever had Read Across America guests read in both languages. With over 90% of the students at Heights-Terrace of Hispanic descent, and some students and their parents fluent in Spanish exclusively, Chelsea and Jeremy felt that their reading truly served this community.
