When you walk into La Casita de Familia in Shenandoah, you experience the smells of spices you would find in Seduc Zamundio and Flor Gomez's home. They're the co-owners of the Mexican restaurant and said everything they put on the menu is something you would find on the streets of Mexico.
"If you go to the markets and everything, they have all these refreshing drinks there and like even the street tacos. But up in this area, I don't think a lot of people ate a lot of the corn tortilla or had the traditional street taco, so a lot that we introduced to the community," Gomez explained.
The couple say they got their start in food service while selling tamales to their co-workers at their former warehouse job.
"My family, we would always sell tamales, and we'd sell them. So one day, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law were making tamales, and I said maybe they would sell," Gomez said.
They hope to encourage people in Schuylkill County to try something new.
"A lot of people bought them just to try them out because they really didn't know what they were. And they liked them, so that's kind of their first flavor of authentic," she added.
They sold so well that their small vendor stand transformed into a storefront. Now, their kitchen features three generations, using only family recipes.
“Muy especial porque aquí tengo a mi mamá trabajando. Ella nos enseñó todo. Estoy muy agradecido” said Zamudio.
"It's very special because I have my mom working here. She's taught us everything, I'm very grateful," said Zamudio.
They are serving the flavors of their home to every customer that walks through their doors.
