The Red Kettle Campaign | Check It Out With Chelsea

Chelsea sees what makes the Salvation Army's largest fundraiser a success year after year.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The sound of a grocery cart making its way through a supermarket parking lot is almost unmistakable.

The same could be said for the bell that is rung by volunteers raising money for The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign.

"These funds raised through the Red Kettle Campaign put a plate of food on somebody's table that maybe wouldn't have it. Or a toy under a tree that maybe wouldn't have it this Christmas," says Lieutenant Ismael Ortiz with The Salvation Army in Wilkes-Barre.

We found out quickly that the bell really does inspire donors... and sometimes makes people want to sing and dance!

But other than a motivation to place a dollar in the kettle or fill people with the holiday spirit, people with The Salvation Army hope this sound gives shoppers something else.

"We pray, and we hope that people feel hope through these bells," said Ortiz.
