Readying the reindeer | Check It Out With Chelsea

Newswatch 16's Chelsea Strub found a farm in Columbia County where some of Santa's best performers spend their time.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Pa. — Believe it or not, some of Santa's reindeer spend a lot of time in central Pennsylvania at Spruce Run Farm in Madison Township, near Bloomsburg.

"They are here all year long. We're a training ground for the North Pole and Santa. We do takeoffs and landings. We're not allowed to fly, but we can do takeoffs and landings and get everybody all trained for that big day, one time a year," explained owner David Hoover, with a twinkle in his eye.

Santa Claus himself tells us this is one of his favorite places to send his reindeer in the offseason.

"I bring my reindeer here because there's rough terrain. And Dave is one of the best reindeer trainers in the country," said the jolly old elf.

Before the big night, each of the reindeer goes into the barn one at a time for a checkup.

First, their temperatures are checked by scanning a microchip in their back. Then they are treated for fleas and ticks. Then, Hoover gives some shots. And the process starts all over again.

Santa allows Hoover to take the reindeer around to different events ahead of Christmas, so if you are lucky enough to meet one of these helpers in person, make sure to be nice.
