Behind the scenes at the Cardboard Classic | Check It Out with Chelsea

Last week, brave members of the WNEP team traveled down a ski slope in a cardboard box as part of a big competition on Montage Mountain.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — When it comes to constructing a sled to compete in the Cardboard Classic on Montage Mountain, materials are limited to tape, glue, string, and cardboard.

"They're the only rules we had. It just has to be within seven feet wide to fit down the slope," said Dan 'T-Dog' Kosloski.

The WNEP felt good about their chances on the slopes after a successful run last year.

"Last year is definitely our best year so far."

Broadcast directors Dan Kosloski and Eric Seery built this year's sled for the competition with last year's design in mind.

"Kind of aerodynamic and to make sure the front is curled. That way, you don't get stuck in the snow. We learned that the hard way a couple of years ago," Kosloski said.

Also keeping space in mind, as well as transportation on the big day of the competition.

It was clear when we got in line that other competitors went for the "wow" factor.

"The Munchkin box, really creative, too, and the Wawa. I saw a sandwich; I wanted to buy one, but I don't think it's real," said Yolany Maldonado, WNEP web content creator.

"I thought it was pretty amazing what some people came up with. There are some people that have a roller coaster. I saw a monster truck which was insane," said Newswatch 16's Valeria Quinones.

"They're beautiful sleds," Kosloski said. "Ours is built for, hopefully, making it down the hill. We'll be happy to make it to the bottom."

Once we got to the top, the nerves start to kick in as you realize you're relying on cardboard to keep you safe.

"People are saying once you get up there, it looks more steep than it does right now. So I'm a little nervous for that, but I'm really excited," Valeria said.

"Trying not to scream as loud to not hurt everyone's ears!"
