LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The days of getting your receipt checked by someone after shopping at one major retailer are close to being over, thanks to artificial intelligence.
Walmart announced on Tuesday they’ve made big strides in rolling out AI receipt verification at more than 120 – or 20% -- of Sam’s Clubs in the U.S.

Here’s how it works. After a Sam’s Club member finishes paying at a register or self-checkout, the company says the items will go through a combination of computer vision and digital technology at the exit to verify payment. Because it’s AI, Walmart says the system is continually learning and improving its process.
The technology was first shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. According to a news release from Walmart, the new technology has led to Sam’s Club members leaving nearly 23% faster.
Walmart said it expects to have the technology in all of its Sam’s Club stores by the end of 2024. We reached out to Sam's Club, who told us all of their Houston stores have this technology.
