Scranton theater has strong showing at grand opening following marquee controversy

While some are not a fan of the bright marquee lighting out front, the cinema's owner hopes the theatre will bring more people to downtown Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. — The lights are officially on after the grand opening of Scranton Art Haus Cinema and Social Club along Lackawanna Avenue in the city's downtown.

It's the newest business to fill the location, which has seen several other theaters over the last few years.

"It's a really big moment. I had a soft opening in July to test market some things and get the marquee built because it was custom built," said  Noelle Snyder, the general manager of Art Haus.

Snyder says the building's marquee, which has been lit for weeks ahead of the grand opening, has drawn a bit of controversy from those who live in a neighboring apartment building.

In mid-March a violation notice was posted after the city received complaints about the marquee lighting being too bright.

Scranton officials tell Newswatch 16 city workers visited multiple apartments where residents had expressed concerns. Officials have spoken with both building owners and are confident that a solution will be reached.

"At our open house, Mayor Cognetti was here, and I spoke with her, and she said that the city, there's no violation between the two owners and that they're very happy to have us here, and it was just miscommunication," said Snyder.

"We were just chatting about that now how there has been controversy about it and I can't see why," Chris Weldon of Elkdale.

Weldon says the lights and renovated theater bring new life to the city, which he feels was lacking before.

"I think it's beautiful," said Weldon. "It's very retro and classical looking it adds quite a bit to the neighborhood."

General manager Noelle Snyder tells Newswatch 16 that for now, the lights will be shut off at midnight Monday through Friday.

On Saturday and Sunday, the marquee will be lit until 2 a.m.
