HONESDALE, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet an older dog whose owner passed away a few months ago. Sunshine is wary of new people, so she just needs to be given the chance and a little time to adjust, and then she will make her new family very happy.
"She's definitely got a few quirks. When she meets people, she's very apprehensive. It takes her a while to warm up to you. She's very dramatic," said Debra Moore, Silver Tales Rescue.
Sunshine is a little dog with a big attitude.
"She's a very on-her-terms kind of dog. If you sit on the sofa, she'll jump on the sofa next to you when she's ready," Moore said.
Sunshine's owner passed away a few months ago, so she was surrendered to Silver Tales Rescue, an entirely foster-based rescue out of Wayne County. Since then, the 9-year-old rat terrier has been living with Moore in Honesdale.
Sunshine's name certainly suits her. She is afraid of thunder and all loud, sudden noises, like fireworks, too. She would be happiest in a quieter home.
"I don't know if she would do well with small kids. She would do well with older kids, but I don't think smaller kids. I think they just move too fast for her," Moore explained.
Sunshine listens well, sleeps well in her crate, and is overall very well-trained.
And despite the fact that she is wary of new people, Sunshine is great around other animals. She can go to a home with cats, dogs of any size, and even birds. She would like a fenced-in yard or at least a family that can take her on walks. Those walks will need to be on a leash, though, especially early on.
"She's going to be work. She's not going to be easy at first. She's going to be a little bit of work, but once she gets used to you, you start to figure her out, then she'll fit right in," Moore said.
