Successful weekend for local animal shelters

It was a successful weekend for adoption and fundraising events for local animal shelters.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — We featured Rocky on 16 to the Rescue back in May. A few weeks later, we featured him again during our un-Westminster dog show on the morning show.

Rescue workers at the SPCA of Luzerne County tell us Rocky's new family saw both of our stories and fell in love with him and his amazing personality. Rocky was officially adopted last week and is now living in his forever home.

At the time we featured him, Rocky was the SPCA of Luzerne County's longest resident. When he went home last week, he had spent 360 days in the shelter, five days short of one year. Rocky's family renamed him Hemi, and he is now living a life of luxury but earning his keep. He joins his mom at the office and gets work done.

In Scranton, nearly a dozen cats are going to their forever homes thanks to an adoption event over the weekend. Last week, we told you about the kitten shower at St. Cats and Dogs of Nay Aug Zoo happening over the weekend. Rescue workers at St. Cats tell us they were overwhelmed with donations of food, litter, cleaning supplies and cash, and they say many of those people came in because of our coverage here on the morning show.

They hoped to fill one playpen of donated items, but photos sent to the news station show us the community went above and beyond, filling two and then some. Rescue workers also tell us that 11 cats and kittens received applications and will be going home thanks to the kitten shower here in Scranton. That's about how many adoptions St. Cats and Dogs have had in total so far this year.

In Northumberland County, the fundraiser at Route 61 Events, Rock for Rescues, raised more than $8,000. All of that money will go directly to Mommy and Me Rescue and Rescue Pets Serving Vets. Rescue workers with both rescues also tell us they had lots of interest in their adoptable dogs, and this week, they hope to see those adoptions become official.
