Mike | 16 To The Rescue

Mike is a 1-year-old terrier/hound mix that has not received much attention since arriving at Laura's Hope Rescue.

HOP BOTTOM, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 1-year-old terrier/hound mix that has not received a single application email or message since he came to live at an animal shelter in Susquehanna County.

"He's housebroken, he's crate-trained, he's leash-trained. We take him for walks in the woods, and he's got his nose to the ground, and he loves going up to the pond and looking at things. I just can't figure it out because there's got to be somebody out there that likes the same things that Mike does," said Grace Benson at Laura's Hope Rescue.

Mike has been living at Laura's Hope Rescue near Hop Bottom since the summer. He was rescued with several other dogs from Florida during Hurricane Idalia and has not received any interest since he got to Susquehanna County.

Mike is a 1-year-old terrier/hound mix that rescue workers have just fallen in love with. They say he could benefit from some obedience training but only to fine-tune his manners since he is still very young.

"Great recall; when you tell him to stop, he stops. How he snuggles up when we're at the pond, and we're just sitting there enjoying the fall foliage together. He listens. When you tell him to go kennel up, he goes, and he kennels up. He's been an excellent resident here," Benson said.

Mike does not like cats and probably any other small animal out in the yard. That is non-negotiable. But he gets along great with other dogs.

His best friend at Laura's Hope is Berta, another dog rescued from Florida during the hurricane. Rescue workers wanted to show off just how well they play together.

"Ideally, it would be great to see them together, but theoretically, that's not going to happen. But he's great with other dogs, and he's great with female dogs. Hopefully, whoever has a female dog who is looking for a high-energy dog like Mike, this might be the perfect fit," Benson said.

Rescue workers know that perfect fit is out there; they are hoping this feature will help. He would be happy in any home where he can get outside and play just as much as he can be inside, getting belly rubs.

"A fenced-in yard, number one, would be great because then he could just run off his energy. Or maybe they run or jog, or maybe they're hikers. That would be great for Mike. Somebody that is not going to give up on him if he has a problem. They're going to work through it; who is going to guarantee that he is going to be there forever," said Benson.
