DANVILLE, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet royalty. Duchess is now the longest — and one of the most loved — residents living at the Pennsylvania SPCA Central PA Center in Danville.
"We want to make sure her first adoption out of the shelter is her last adoption," said Kristen Szwast, the site director of the Pennsylvania SPCA Central PA Center in Danville.
Duchess was rescued more than a year ago. She came to live at the shelter in Montour County last March.
"Her biggest fear is meeting new people, which really has been hard for placing her just because she takes a couple of meets to get to know who you are. We're hoping that this will be her chance to shine," Szwast said.
Rescue workers say Duchess is the kind of girl who needs to be swooned a few times before she fully trusts you, but once she does, it is worth it. Duchess is about 4 years old and is a pit bull mix.
"It's kind of sad, but Duchess never really had toys. Now that she has toys, she's very possessive of them. So a home with older kids, teenagers that can be respectful of that, like you can't just go up and grab something from her," said Szwast.
Specifically, her tennis ball. Duchess could keep herself occupied all day long with one. Rescue workers say she is the perfect pocket pitty with her two modes: the right amount of couch potato and zoomies.
"An active home, so she loves to be outside and play. This is her in her natural state, running around being goofy," Szwast said.
And Duchess only has a few other requirements for her perfect home.
"A home that has smaller dogs, she's open to playing and meeting with them. Bigger dogs can be scary, not a lot of people that come over a lot. A home that's more focused with their family and does outdoorsy stuff would be her outdoorsy setting," said Szwast.

If you are interested in adopting her, Saturday, May 11, might be a good day to do it. Pennsylvania SPCA Central PA Center in Danville is hosting an Empty the Shelter event all day long. All adoption fees for all pets, both dogs and cats, will be reduced to $10 for one day only.
