HONESDALE, Pa. — A beauty to behold—that is how rescue workers at Dessin Animal Shelter describe 2-year-old Delta.
They have never had an Akita before and could not wait for us to meet her this week.
Delta has been living at the shelter near Honesdale for about two months. She was an owner-surrender after her previous family had a change in circumstances.
"So far, since it's such a specific breed, we haven't had any interest in her yet. We're really hoping to get the word out. I'm hoping there are some Akita lovers out there because she's a real gem," said Linda Gambone, Dessin Animal Shelter.
Rescue workers say Delta is true to her breed. So, while they think she will be happy in any kind of home, they think her new family should be familiar with the Akita or Husky breed.
"She's very independent, very athletic. She likes to explore. She's not exactly a warm and fuzzy dog. She will bond with her family and show her brand of affection," Gambone explained.
Rescue workers say Delta can sometimes be aloof with strangers, but we did not see that. She warmed right up to both us and the camera. Delta lived with the same family her whole life, was well taken care of, and therefore is well-trained.
"We go on walks almost every day out in the woods. She loves to explore and hunt. She's very systematic and methodical. It's like she has a plan in mind," said Gambone.
Rescue workers say those walks with Delta have become a special part of their daily routine, and they are excited for a new family to make that routine permanent.
Delta can go to a home with other dogs, but they should be on the calmer side. No cats for Delta and older kids are OK, but Delta does not like to play with toys much.
Rescue workers know there is the perfect family out there looking for a companion exactly like Delta.
"She does require some exercise. Maybe a good long walk or a nice big, fenced yard. Once she gets her exercise out of her system, she's pretty chill dog," said Gambone.
