Beau and Baloo | 16 To The Rescue

In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a pair of Akitas who must be adopted together.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a pair of Akitas who are bonded and must be adopted together, which has been a bit tricky despite the wonderful pets they would make.

"Since the day they met four and a half years ago, they have not been separated, so we would hate to do that to them now," explained Randy Lucas, development director of the SPCA of Luzerne County.

Beau and Baloo are a bonded pair. Beau was adopted as a puppy, and a few months later, his owner decided he needed a friend. Now they are more than friends, they are brothers.

"They actually were originally here at the shelter a few years ago. They got adopted to a wonderful family. Unfortunately, the man had to get back surgery and can't walk them anymore, so to honor him and these dogs, we would love to find a loving forever home for both of them together," Lucas said.

Beau and Baloo have been back at SPCA of Luzerne County for about two months. Beau is about 5, and Baloo is about 6. Both are Akitas, and just like true brothers, one only wants a toy if the other has it. One only wants attention and petting if the other is getting it.

"They love to play. They do roughhouse a little bit, but it's playful, it's brotherly love. They love people, everyone that they meet. They don't like other animals," said Lucas.

That is why Beau and Baloo have been tricky to place, because they need to go together, but with no other pets in the home. They would be happiest in a home where they can get outside and play during the day and snuggle at night. Probably no kids for these two. They are pretty good on a leash, but together, they weigh more than 200 pounds.

"If you have a history with a bigger dog like this and you're looking to fill that couch up, these two are the ones for you," Lucas said.

When shelter volunteers found out we were featuring Beau and Baloo this week, they all said the same thing: They would adopt these brothers themselves if it weren't for other dogs already in the home.

"They are definitely volunteer favorites. It's hard to watch them play and not have a smile on your face. They're just wonderful dogs," said Lucas.
