Katara | 16 To The Rescue

In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 1-year-old boxer/mix who was left tied to a tree. Rescue workers saved her and now want to find her a forever home.

MONTROSE, Pa. — This week, we meet Katara, a 1-year-old boxer/mix living at True Friends Animal Welfare Center near Montrose.

Katara and her brother were found tied to a tree in Montrose in September. Rescue workers do not know anything about her past, but they know Katara must have had a hard time before coming to the shelter in Susquehanna County.

"They were severely emaciated, super skinny. As you can see, we got them back to chubby little babies," said Lexus Hemenway, a True Friends Animal Welfare Center worker.

Rescue workers say Katara is the picture-perfect dog to adopt because she is still a puppy, so she loves to go for walks and play. She is also really sweet with humans despite everything she has been through.

"At first, she can be super shy to new people. Obviously, because they were strays, we don't know how they were treated. But she and her brother can both be pretty shy at first. But once they warm up to you and see you're not going to hurt them, they get absolutely crazy out here. They jump around, they like to play, especially together," said Hemenway.

But rescue workers say Katara does not have to be adopted with her brother.

Katara would do well in a home with other dogs, and rescue workers would love to see her go to a home with kids. They think she would benefit from a high-energy house to keep her entertained, and even though she and her brother have a lot in common, rescue workers say Katara's soft side is why they chose her for this week's 16 To The Rescue.

"My favorite thing about her is although she is crazy, she can be very sweet. She will come up to you and just kind of nudge you a little and give you kisses," Hemenway said.

We were lucky enough to get to see that side of Katara. She gave the camera so many of those nudges and kisses.

You can also support True Friends Animal Welfare Center at the shelter's holiday fundraiser, A Doggone Meowy Christmas, on Sunday, December 3, at the VFW in Montrose.
