DYBERRY, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 2-year-old dog named Amber who is having trouble at the shelter.
"So we're looking for a family that will make her the only princess," said Linda Gambone, Dessin Animal Shelter.
Amber deserves to be the only princess, especially after 5 months at the shelter. Amber is a bull terrier and came to live at Dessin Animal Shelter near Honesdale as a stray back in June.
"She's very stressed right now at the shelter surrounded by dogs and cats, so we've been taking her to off-sites and adoption events, and she does great. She's a very different dog. She's very calm and relaxed," Gambone said.
Rescue workers at Dessin Animal Shelter say Amber is having trouble finding her forever home because she needs to be the only pet in the home. They wanted to feature her for this week's 16 To The Rescue because she has an entirely different personality when she is out of her kennel, and this is the side of her they want people to see.
"I don't think she shows very well in the kennel. She paws at the kennel and looks very desperate, and is like, 'Please take me home,' but once you get her out, it's almost like she breathes a sigh of relief and is just relaxed and happy, and very chill," said Gambone.
Amber is very smart. Rescue workers love to do nose work with her, and she is good at it. She uses her nose to seek and find treats and solve puzzles at the shelter.
"She is super easy on a leash. She doesn't pull. I think someone worked with her and did hand touch. She kind of heals with you. She doesn't need to walk very far. She plays a little bit with toys, tennis balls, and squeaky toys, but not much. I think she just wants to be around people," said Gambone.
When she is around people, she is gentle and affectionate. Rescue workers think she'll make the best companion and will be happy in pretty much any home where she's the only pet. Older kids are okay, too.
"My favorite thing about her is just the way she looks at me with these big brown eyes. She just loves a butt scratch. She'll come in and get some good scratches on her back and her butt. She's just so endearing that way," Gambone said.
