SACRAMENTO, Pa. — Everyone loves potatoes! If you are a potato lover chances are you have served Sterman Masser Potatoes on your table.
Home and Backyard was so excited to visit with the Masser family to learn how to prepare the Masser family potato soup recipe with Julie Masser Ballay and to learn more about their products and ways to serve them with John Masser.
The Masser Family has been farming in Pennsylvania since 1754! Today, 8 generations later, led by David Masser and Julie Masser Ballay, Sterman Masser, Inc., employs approximately 300 people in agricultural, packaging, logistics, sales, and customer service positions. The farming operations have expanded to a total of 4,600 acres, with potatoes, cash grain and hay being produced. The potato packaging and warehouse operations pack and distribute over 250 million pounds of potatoes each year.
Recipes Below:
BASE:
4-5lbs potatoes, peeled, diced
1/2 celery stalk, diced (use inner part)
equal amount of onion, diced
equal amount of carrots, diced
equal amount diced ham
Put in pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until veggies are soft. Add ham and heat through.
CHEESE SAUCE:
1/4c butter
1/4c flour
~4c milk
4c sharp cheddar, shredded
Salt/pepper to taste
Melt butter, whisk in flour (make a rue). Add milk a little at a time, letting it thicken. Once all milk added and thickened, remove from heat and add in cheese, stirring until melted.
Add cheese sauce to pot with veggies.
Ingredients:
Potato Soup
4 cups cubed ( Masser) Blue Denim White Potatoes
6 thick bacon slices
1-1/2 teaspoons olive oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1 stalk celery, chopped
4 cups chicken broth
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
Cook bacon until crisp in three-quart saucepan; remove and drain well on paper towels. Discard bacon grease and wipe pan thoroughly with paper towel. Add olive oil to saucepan and add onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté until onion is soft but not brown (about 3-4 minutes). Stir in chicken broth, potatoes, and pepper; bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, covered, until potatoes are tender (about 10-15 minutes). Stir in cheese, heating until melted; do not boil. Chop bacon and add to soup. Adjust seasoning to taste by adding salt, if desired. Serve at once.
