Gable House Bakery Shares The Secret For Making This Classic British "Checkerboard Cake"

MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — Festive pink and yellow checkered Battenberg cake is perfect for your holiday table.  With its checkered pattern it is sure to impress and delight your guests!  

Nikki Keister-Hornig owner of the Gable House Bakery and Helix House event space showed us how to make Battenberg cake.  Traditional British Battenberg Cake is created by baking yellow and pink almond sponge-cakes separately, then cutting and combining the pieces in a checkered pattern.  The cake is held together by jam and covered with marzipan. Nikki demonstrated how to cut the cakes put them together with jam and roll out the marzipan.  She also shared the best way to cover the cake with the marzipan for a seamless look. 

Nikki decked out Helix Hall for a beautiful Holiday Tea set up featuring Battenberg Cake and other delicious baked treats. 

The Gable House Bakery is a full service bake shop.  They offer wedding cakes, cookie platters,  and an array of freshly baked goods.  They also continue to offer the 40 year tradition of Keister Family gingerbread kits for the holidays. 

Helix Hall is a collaboration of Gable House Bakery and Gilly's Lilies in downtown Mifflinburg. It is a quaint event venue with bakery warmth and florist flair.
