Making Waves: Rowing Gains Popularity

HARVEYS LAKE -- There’s something that’s making waves at one lake in our area.

Newswatch 16's Ryan Leckey has a look at the new boom in a rowing club in Luzerne County that shows the sport isn’t just for college athletes anymore.

Ryan has the details on how people can make a splash with the program at Harveys Lake, try rowing for free,  and more!

The information to try rowing in our area was provided by the Harveys Lake Rowing Club:

· The Harveys Lake Rowing Club is a non-profit organization formed this past spring and is open to 7th graders through adults
· The club is located at Pole 152 at Noxen Road at Harveys Lake
· There are currently more than 35 high school students from the area who are now taking rowing lessons at the club
· The club welcomes new members and is free to join but there are limited spots available; first come, first served basis
· Wyoming Seminary has a rowing club at the Upper School and will look into the possibility of developing a rowing team in the future
· Rowing sessions are held in the morning Monday-Friday
· New clubhouse for the rowing club will be built during the next 12 months

ABOUT ROWING:

· Kids and adults of all ages can learn to row and the sport often provides national and international traveling opportunities
· Collegiate advantages and opportunities: One out of every two women who row get special admission attention in the college process; one out of every six men also get attention; women’s college rowing is growing quickly because of Title 9 pressure to maintain equality between mens’ and womens’ sports; the women’s NCAA rowing championships already one of the biggest and most prestigious regattas in the country
· There was rowing on Harveys Lake in the 1960s; Wilkes University had a crew team during the first decade of this century; The University of Scranton also has fielded crew teams over the past 20 years

ABOUT COACH DEIDRAH KENNEDY:

· Deidrah Kennedy is the club director and coach and has been rowing since she was in middle school in Iowa
· She is teaching the club members how to scull, a type of rowing where the athlete rows with two oars
