POINT TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- One person needs a place to stay after fire gutted a home in Northumberland County.

Crews from several communities were called to the place on Susquehanna Trail, or Route 147, near Sunbury around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

When they arrived, firefighters found the home in a ball of flames. They quickly called in for backup. That meant crews from Northumberland and Montour Counties responded to that second alarm.

"Arrived on scene, fully involved in fire, whole structure and a lot of it was already falling in on itself at that point," said Point Township Fire Chief Jim Geise.

Chief Geise says one man lived in the place and made it out safely.

A neighbor called 911.

Geise told Newswatch 16 the home was filled with flames and was already collapsing when the first trucks arrived.

"It tells me it was burning for a while before we got here, before it was called in," said the chief.

The first firefighters at the scene on Susquehanna Trail quickly called for backup, but the fate of this home was already sealed.

"There wasn't much we could do at this point. It was pretty much gone when we got here," Geise added.

The man who owns the home declined to talk about what happened, and what he will do now that just about everything he owns is gone.

A fire marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

The chief does not consider the fire suspicious at this time.

Susquehanna Trail was closed for several hours after Tuesday morning's fire.
