AVOCA, Pa. -- State officials started issuing Real IDs on Friday, March 1.
The new licenses meet federal anti-terrorism standards.
Come October 1, 2020, you'll need one of these or a passport to fly domestically or enter most federal and military buildings.
"I think it's a good thing. I mean obviously, our country could always use some more protection so if it's something interstate that we can protect then that's always better," said Emily Johnson of Clarks Summit.
The new identification cards not required. You can still drive with a regular drivers license.
Real IDs cost $30.
If you got your drivers license for the first time after September 2003, you should be able to order one online.
Otherwise, you will need to head to a drivers license center with your birth certificate, proof of social security, name change information and 2 proofs of address.
The documents must be the originals or certified copies.
"It just makes travel easier and it's easy for me since I got my license after 2003 everything is already there and it's just a really easy process," said Makaela Johnson of Clarks Summit.
PennDOT officials recommend you get your Real ID as soon as possible.
"You don't want to be at the DMV with everybody else who procrastinated right before October 2020. But the other thing is the documents will take a while to get," said PennDOT spokesman James May.
After processing your documents, most drivers license centers will mail you your Real ID in 15 business days. Some DMV's can issue them the same day.
