More Than 100 Sea Turtles Found Dead Off Cape Cod

This nearly 300-pound loggerhead turtle was among those rescued by Mass Audubon volunteers.

A total of 173 sea turtles died off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, this week because of the extreme cold, according to Mass Audubon Director Bob Prescott.

Prescott said 227 cold-stunned turtles were recovered from the Gulf of Maine since Wednesday, but only 54 lived. Mass Audubon, the largest nature conservation nonprofit in Massachusetts, regularly patrols the beaches this time of year looking for cold-stunned turtles, Prescott said.

But this was many more than they expected, he said.

“This was way too cold,” Prescott said. “Everything was slushy by yesterday morning. Some of them are small. It didn’t take long for them to freeze.”

Most sea turtles migrate between areas where they can find food and areas where they can give birth, and typically to warmer waters, according to SEE Turtles, a conservation tourism project that aims to protect sea turtles.

Prescott told CNN he attributes the deaths of the turtles to global warming.

“The Gulf of Maine prior to 2010 was too cold for sea turtles to come into,” he said.

But, the poor creatures dead from – freezing… And global warming is to blame.
There you go folks, they have everything all figured out. Small wonder some people don’t know what gender they are any more – they buy into this nonsense that global WARMING caused sea creatures to FREEZE. Wow…

You’re another valley armchair knowitall who has zero clue about anything, especially how global warming affects overall *climate* creating new extremes in both directions. But keep basking in your glorious blue collar know nothing ignorance thinking little old you knows more than armies of people that actually went to school for years to understand this stuff, unlike yourself, to become scientists. Oh but I forgot, your kind doesn’t value science or any fancy book learnin’. It’s all a sham.

Jim – I believe what is being said here is that during our warmer periods, that the ocean is warm enough that these turtles have started venturing further north …… so far north that they don’t have time to retreat back to warmer waters when it starts getting cold again. There’s all kinds of critters that seem to be able to move further north and even adapt to the temp change. I hear there is a hybrid python that is even moving further north …… and no, not to PA. ~8^) I’m no climate alarmist and do not subscribe to the lie that 97% of “scientist” agree with the global warming meme. In fact the real data (not the doctored data) shows that there is no significant change. The other thing that cracks me up is the CO2 scare ……. last time I looked – plants thrive on higher levels, and back when the earth was really really green, the levels were much much higher. Seems this so-called environmental committee are a bunch of bullies with bad data, trying to hold whole countries hostage with their BS. I’m glad Trump pulled us away from that Environmental cabal ……..
